Female Hormone Therapy Q&A

What is hormone therapy?

Hormone therapy or hormonal therapy is the use of hormones in medical treatment. At Integrative Care 360, Dr. Turner offers:

Hormone pellet therapy

Hormone pellet therapy is a form of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Rather than gels, creams, injections, or oral pills, this therapy implants small pellets underneath your skin to release consistent physiologic levels of hormones.

Bioidentical hormones

Since they mimic the same hormones your body already creates, bioidentical hormones are safe with minimal side effects and well tolerated by most people. As a Biote® provider, Dr. Turner can design your personalized pellet treatment. The benefits of bioidentical hormones include potentially more precise hormone replacement therapy, reduced risk of side effects, and individualized treatment options.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for hormone therapy?

Getting tested is the best way to know if you are a good candidate for hormone therapy.

For women, imbalance or dysfunction in hormonal levels can start as early as the reproductive years. Fatigue, infertility, irregular periods, acne, and lower abdominal fat are only a few of the signs.

What can I expect during a hormone therapy session?

Dr. Turner uses the information collected during your visits and the result, your initial blood work, to develop a customized treatment plan targeting your specific hormone deficiency.

What can I expect during a hormone pellet therapy session?

When ready, Dr. Turner uses numbing medication to numb the area. She then places the pellet, smaller than a grain of rice, into the fatty tissue. Often the upper buttock is used as the placement area due to the amount of tissue present.

After insertion of the pellets, you should avoid vigorous physical activity for approximately 2-3 days. After three days, you may resume regular activity.

What are the benefits of hormone pellet therapy?

Hormone therapy offers the following benefits:

  • Fewer side effects than synthetic hormones
  • Mimic hormones in your body
  • Customizable based on the body’s hormone levels
  • Lasts up to 6 months
  • Better compliance

Pellet implants have consistently been shown to correct hormonal imbalance and dysfunction symptoms in both men and women and reduce symptoms of insomnia, headaches, migraines, joint aches and pains, low sex drive and libido, and hot flashes. They can also improve cardiovascular health and abdominal fat loss.

What conditions does Hormone Therapy treat?

Hormone therapy is used to treat various conditions, including menopause symptoms (hot flashes, vaginal dryness), hormonal imbalances (e.g., thyroid disorders), gender transition for transgender individuals, and certain types of cancer (e.g., breast and prostate cancer).
